What are the intern eligibility guidelines for Mitacs Enterprise?

Broadly, prospective interns must be graduates of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines and he/she must have graduated no more than five (5) years from his/her STEM program. Interns may also be current graduate students (Masters and Doctoral levels).   Interns cannot be current employees of the company or hold current employment with another company. Interns may have previous FT employment, but cannot be currently employed.

I am a potential intern. Do I need a company partner to apply?

 

No.  You are welcome to apply, regardless of whether or not you have a company partner.  Once you have been accepted into the program, you will be requested to view the current internship opportunities and select your top three choices.  If there aren’t any opportunities which suit you, we will keep your application on file until a suitable match can be made.

My company is interested in taking part in Enterprise. Do we need to have identified an intern before applying?

 

No.  Your company is welcome to apply, regardless of whether or not you have an intern identified.  Once you have been pre-qualified, we will post your proposed intern job title and description on our website.  Potential interns will be requested to visit the site and apply to their top three choices.  You will receive notification of which interns have applied and will be asked to select candidates for interviews. 

How many Enterprise interns can a company have at one time?

 

A company may hold more than one internship at a time, but spots will be limited.  

How many internships can one company hold over the course of the Enterprise program?

The total number of internship will vary.

Is Mitacs Enterprise available to any type of company?

 

Companies eligible for funding under the Mitacs Enterprise program must be located in Southern Ontario, in a related field to science, technology, engineering and/or math discipline(s) and be under 1,000 employees.
 
If you do have an intern in mind, please ensure that he/she fills out an intern application form and indicates your company information.
 
Are there any restrictions on the types of projects under Mitacs Enterprise?

There are no restrictions on the type of project.  The job should be appropriate for the intern’s skill level and needs to provide the intern with valuable work experience.  We do require that the intern participate in project involving at least 2 of the desired experience areas (Research and Development, Marketing, Product Development, Operations, Strategic Planning, Human Resources, Finance, Project Management, Sales and Customer Service).

Is an Enterprise internship eligible for the SR&ED program?

If there are R&D activities directly related to the Enterprise internship, then the project will most likely qualify for SR&ED credits.  Please refer to your local SR&ED representative for further assistance.

I have already participated in a Mitacs program. Am I eligible for Enterprise?

Yes, a company or student can participate in Enterprise regardless of how many other Mitacs programs they have been involved with.

I am a postdoctoral fellow, am I still eligible to apply for Mitacs Enterprise?

Yes, you may apply to the Enterprise program as long as you graduated from you PhD studies less than five years prior to the application.

I am nearing graduation. Can I apply now to Mitacs Enterprise?

Yes, you are able to apply to the Enterprise program.  Be sure to indicate your expected graduation date on the application form.  Upon approval, you will be placed on our registered list and can apply to our current opportunities.  Please note, you cannot accept an internship opportunity as a “recent graduate” until you have completed your degree.

I do not see an internship opportunity that matches my skills. What do I do?

New proposals for internships are posted weekly on our website. Please check it regularly. You will remain registered on our approved list until a course that matches your profile becomes available.

 

I am a potential Mitacs Enterprise intern. Is there an application deadline?

Currently, there are no application deadlines for interns.
